Leo's Pedigree

Crime Wave, aka Leo, was bred by Vicky Schowe. His sire is Judge TC; dam is Toppenish.

Of course, Leo has some inbreeding. Both his mom and dad have In Reality, which is a Man O' War line, Princequillo and Nearco (farther back). According to Pedigree Query, Princequillo - an Irish Thoroughbred - was smuggled through German blockades during World War I and then imported to the USA. Lucky horse!

Originally, I was curious to see if Leo has any siblings by Toppenish that are racing right now and sure enough, Leo's got a 6-yr half brother, Sloane Ranger, who is doing really well - having won over $450,000 so far in his career. Sloane Ranger is also a dark bay. He's a grandson of Storm Cat, who sometimes comes up in sport horse pedigree talks. Supposedly Storm Cat offspring can be headcases but they are athletic. Hmm, you'd think Leo had some Storm Cat in his blood but he doesn't.

Getting another Judge TC foal will be hard, if not impossible, as he was sold to a breeding farm in Saudia Arabia and exported in 2006. Judge TC is a grandson of Secretariat, a Bold Ruler line. One of Blood Horse's bloggers thought this was a huge loss to US breeders because of his bloodlines. And it wasn't the Secretariat-Bold Ruler lineage they were lamenting (which makes sense because it is so common). It was a line of mares: Aspidistra through Quit Me Not.

Evidently, Judge TC is one of the few stallions with that specific lineage available. (Though there is a new young stallion who has it too, Purim.) Aspidistra lines are known for soundness and she was the dam of a couple champion racers: Ta Wee and Dr. Fager. Ta Wee, Sioux for "Beautiful Girl", was sprinter who took on the boys with great success and is in the Hall of Fame. She even has a Wikipedia page! As does Dr. Fager, considered to be one of 100 best racers of the 20th century. Unbridled can also be traced back to Aspidistra, along with a number of other stakes winners. Because of the success of her offpsring, she's considered by some to be a foundation mare for the thoroughbred breed.

When I did a search to see what people were saying about Judge TC offpsring temperaments, I found a Chronicle Forum thread. Everyone says they are very sane and easy to work with, so I guess Leo gets his temperament from his mom. Now, I wonder who he gets his freakish athleticism from. I'll have to do a little research and see if I can find someone else competing a thoroughbred with Judge TC bloodlines.

Based on what I could learn in a quick online search, the first 4 generations matter the most in that they have the most genetic influence. Leo's mom has a lot of South American and French thoroughbreds in her blood. His sire's line is mainly American thoroughbreds, with British thoroughbreds further back.

Leo's first 4 generations are...
