Things I learned from Sally

  • Horse management is just as important as under saddle training.
  • Your program has to be tailored to your horse, you can't tailor your horse to the program.
  • Be adaptable. If one thing doesn't work, don't be afraid to try something else.
  • Accept your horse for who they are i.e. don't try to take a hot horse and turn him into a quiet hunter. Leo will always be tricky in the dressage but will make up for in the jumping. This is something to be appreciated.
  • Problem area? Gotta get to practicing the hard stuff.
  • The only way to develop your eye is to jump courses.
  • When gearing up for a competition, you have to be practicing questions you'll see in the competition arena.
  • Don't be discouraged when you run into problems while schooling. This shows where the edges of your and your horse's education are. It can also help you understand how your horse ticks. You'll also be more likely to successfully deal with problems at a competition if you have dealt with them while schooling.
