Stupid Colic

I got a call on Wednesday that Leo was showing signs of colic. He's fine now, but I did call the vet out. Jaime found him laying down in the field and he wouldn't get up. That is unheard of for Leo - especially at dinner time. Then whenever he stopped walking, he started pawing. They gave him a shot of 10cc banamine and by the time I got there he wanted to eat. He was extremely perky and bright eyed even though he was showing some signs of discomfort. Nothing like when Milo would colic.

The vet did a rectal and found a gas pocket in his intestine. Then she tubed him which she tried to do without sedation but Leo wanted none of that tube in his nose. He dragged the vet and Jaime down the aisle, striking out with his front legs. Clearly the twitch alone wasn't going to work, so sedation it was. He had gas in his stomach as well so the vet pumped him full of H20 and mineral oil. Afterwards she did a second rectal exam and the gas was no longer there.

Looking back, I think he might have gotten dehydrated. He's a really good drinker and Wednesday morning I remember he didn't drink in his stall after our ride and then I didn't see him go to the tough in the field. He got clipped over the weekend and isn't sweaty after our rides anymore. Maybe feeling "cool" tricked him into not drinking enough. Though the weather has been crazy recently too.
