Exercises using Trot Poles & Cavalletti

Winter finally came to Baltimore and we got several days of snow over the Christmas week. Knowing that Leo and I won't be going to Aiken this winter, I started pouring over You Tube videos looking for some new jumping exercises I can add to our repertoire. I came across a video series by Malin Baryard and Peder Fredricson, Olympic show jumpers for Sweden, and am excited to try some of these exercises. Malin and Peter stress relaxation. Despite the fact that the fences are low, the exercises can be mentally and physically demanding, so they are always looking for and rewarding relaxation from the horse. Typically, once a horse fully understands the exercise, they will relax into it.

Exercise 1: Jump - Trot Poles - Jump
The line consists of a small vertical, several strides to a set of trot poles, several strides to another vertical. Canter the vertical, come back to trot for the trot poles, pick up a canter and finish with the last vertical. This is a listening exercise for the horse.

Exercise 2: Trot Poles
Start with 2 sets of trot poles set at a normal distance (poles 1 meter apart). Then shorten one set of poles and lengthen the other (1.2 meters between poles for lengthened distance). This helps with adjustability.

Excerise 3: Canter Cavalletti
Set 3 raised cavalettis in the corner of a ring with a distance of 5 meters between each. This is a normal 1-stride distance. This exercise helps the horse strengthen their inside hind leg.

There are a total of 9 videos in the series. Check them all out on You Tube.
